Before diving into exercises, you need to understand the mechanism. Reaction speed is the time elapsed between a stimulus — visual, auditory, or tactile — and the start of your movement. This delay involves three stages: perception of the signal, its processing by the brain, then the motor response.
Good news: each of these three phases is trainable. The brain is plastic. Neural connections strengthen with repetition, exactly like a muscle. The more you expose yourself to a type of situation, the faster and more automatic your response becomes.

Anticipatory Reading
Learn to read your opponent's intentions before the action. In tennis, you watch the shoulder, not the ball. In soccer, you read the carrier's gaze.
Ready Stance
A slightly bent posture, weight on the balls of your feet, muscles pre-activated. Your waiting position determines everything that follows.
Reflex Training

Watch your opponents in match footage, identify their patterns. Train with a partner who simulates varied situations. Use peripheral vision reaction drills — lateral information often arrives first.
Training Protocol: 4 Weeks
Here is a progressive program to integrate reaction work into your regular training without disrupting your overall physical preparation.
🟣 Weeks 1–2: Activation & Awareness
- Simple reaction drills: ball thrown from the front, catch before impact. 3 sets of 20 reps.
- Sprint starts on audio signal: 8 × 10 m with random departure.
- Mirror drill: copy a partner's movements with as little delay as possible. 5 min.
🟣 Weeks 3–4: Complexity & Pressure
- Multiple stimuli: react to different colors or sounds with different actions (right, left, step back). 4 × 15 reps.
- Short plyometrics: depth jumps, immediate rebound. 3 × 8 jumps.
- Situational game: integrate drills into your specific sport with modified rules (reduced field, time limit). 15 min per session.
Recovery & Sleep: The Invisible Allies
It's easy to forget: reaction speed drops dramatically under fatigue. A single night of insufficient sleep can increase your reaction time by 20 to 40%, which is comparable to a mild state of intoxication. That's not trivial.
7 to 9 hours of sleep per night is the foundation. Add active recovery protocols (stretching, cold baths, post-effort nutrition) and you create optimal conditions for your brain to consolidate reaction learning overnight.
You train during the day. But you improve at night. Sleep is not rest — it's invisible training.
The Mental State: Calm Under Pressure
Paradoxically, wanting to react fast can slow you down. Stress causes cognitive overload — too much information to process, too much fear of making mistakes — and lengthens decision time. The athletes who react best are those who maintain a state of active calm: alert, but relaxed.
Techniques to build into your routine: cardiac coherence (5-5-5: inhale 5 sec, hold 5 sec, exhale 5 sec), pre-competition visualization of fast-paced scenarios, and focus routines to enter a flow state just before effort.
Practical Exercise: The Reset Between Points
Between two actions (a tennis point, a basketball possession), take 3 seconds to: close your eyes, breathe deeply once, reopen your eyes on a fixed point. This mini-reset reboots your nervous system and keeps your reactivity at its peak.
Consistency Is Everything
Reacting faster is not the result of one memorable training session. It's the accumulation of small gains, repeated week after week, integrated into an overall preparation. The athletes who improve the most in this area are not those who train the hardest — they're the ones who train the most intelligently.
